OK, I’m going to eat crow here. When her stab at pop stardom was announced on these pages along with her “I don’t lip sync” pronouncement, I took my usual snide shots at her assuming she was like the rest of the actresses turned singers. If the first single is any indication, this girl might be the real deal. It just started to get some airplay and damn if it isn’t about the catchiest thing on the radio. We’re not talking earth shattering, but high quality pop/rock closer to the Alanis/Avril/Skye end of the spectrum than the Hilary/Lindsay/Ashlee end. It is worth also checking out the AOL sessions version of the same song. She actually SINGS LIVE and plays her own instrument (guitar). Isn’t that against teen diva rules? She might get drummed out of the union for that :-) Ah, the naivete of youth.

I’m not a kid. I still haven’t see anything special about her. Nothing that will make me by her album or see her performing ”live”. She can sing just like all the other you mentioned no better nor worst. They are just different from each other and in that way are all incomparable to each others. In that list I like Alanis, Avril and Hilary. I have both Avril album, both Hilary album. I just happen to listen more often to Hilary’s album, and I have no intention to see Avril live either. It is called having different taste. Which is great with music nowadays, there is something for everyone to like.

Err..I didn’t say you were. I checked what I wrote - no ssl there anywhere. The “naivete of youth” comment was directed at the singers, not the fans. As for the rest of what you said, I think we have reached the point where we can civilly disagree. As I have mentioned before, I do not think Hilary is a terrible singer - just one with a limited vocal range. Her voice singing live (as opposed to studio enhancements that make everyone sound good) is reasonably close to her recordings except in points where obvious studio effects (echo, reverb, etc.) were used. She is not as good as her fans think nor as bad as her detractors think. Just an average voice. I have given her credit for breaking free from the lip syncing mold (and she DID lip sync on her first tour - at least in the show I saw) and become an effective live performer - albeit one I don’t care for. My issues with her is that everything she does seems so preplanned and focus grouped that she has removed any spark of originality she might have possessed. Her first album in particular is standard teen pop fare professionally done using top musicians and backup singers in such a way as to cover up any limitations - in the end, it is music that is competent but soulless. It is the musical equivalent of white bread - familiar but bland. And nothing gets under my skin more than bland. Of the other singers I mentioned, Alanis and Skye Sweetnam are the ones who are originals. Avril’s first album was an edgier version of the focus group model but her second one seemed to at least move in the right direction (anyone is bound to get part of their soul back when they get rid of the Matrix as producers). Ashlee’s album was similar to Avril’s first but she has been exposed as a total fraud. Lindsay is the bottom rung of the ladder. If this is how she sounds after ten years of singing lessons, she better not give up the day job. She won’t be able to keep her nose on those toilet seats long with albums like hers. Brie Larson’s “She Said” (and it’s only ONE song) is an incredibly catchy tune done in good power pop fashion and she gets brownie points for taking her musical career seriously enough to write her own stuff and play a musical instrument. Maybe it’s a fluke and everything else she does sucks - but for now I’ll give her a free pass and put her among the better half.

First I never said that Hilary was the best singer. I only said that she can sing and that she doesn’t lip synch. I don’t like to compare singer/actor I limit myself to ”I like or don’t like what they do”. I know that if I don’t like someone, it, in no way, means that others that do like that someone have no taste or are stupid for having different taste.
