Janet Jackson Debuts At #2 On Billboard
April 7, 2004 - Contributed by Kizzardkid: According to Billboard.com, ‘Damita Jo’ has debuted at #2 on The Billboard 200, selling 381,000 copies in its first week. Janet’s latest album missed the top spot to Usher’s ‘Confessions’, which during its second week sold 486,000 copies. It is her second highest first week sales ever, next to 2001’s ‘All for You’, which opened with first week sales of 605,000 copies and has sold 3 million to date. ‘Damita Jo’ is Janet’s first studio album not to debut at #1 since 1989’s ‘Rhythm Nation 1814’.
I think this is a good first week - more than expected as far as I know. Pity usher fell so much - 57% - I really like his album. As for Janet every1 knows chart positions don’t matter so much as they used to. I’d say she’s happy. As for Americans only buying black music - I don’t see anything wrong with this - but it does annoy me that the way they have changed the Billboard Hot 100 means ONLY hip hop acts can get #1 - doh!
At some parts it maybe true, I am, like you is sick of R’n’B topping most of the top slots in the chart. But then again, not all R’n’B oriented acts just go straight up to the top. There was a time when it was all pop acts ruled the charts and everyone was complaining that these no-talents where claiming the top position. Maybe it’s just a phase.
Usher’s selling records on hype alone, Both of his singles are pretty weak. ‘Yeah’ is just another take on the ‘Crunk’ explosion, ‘Burn’ is just cookie cutter r&b fluff. The whole ‘Confessions’ album isn’t breaking any new ground. I’m not a very big Janet fan but I really respect her because she’s overcome a lot to get where she is. I love the ‘Damita Jo’ record, It’s daring and sultry. So I think Janet should’ve done better then Usher.
I don’t like Janet all that much…but I think she did a great job on SNL. Hey, she has a sense of humor! lol. I thought her performances were kinda weak only because I couldn’t hear her..but the dancing was good and everything. there was a skit that was funny..but I can’t remember so screw it
I was looking forward to “Damita Jo” but after hearing the performances on SNL, I have to say I’m disappointed. The tracks she performed were incredibly weak, vocally and melodically. Was she even singing live? I think she was lip-synching because I saw her hit her mic with her hands while “singing” and dancing and there was no thud sound. “Strawberry Bounce” got the best reviews of all the tracks on the album, but its not all that great. When are artists gonna actually sing on their albums as opposed to just whispering or seductively talking over a beat?
Wow -claps for Janet- She has managed to basically accomplish what Britney has recently been doing, which is overshadowing the song with dancing. From my point of view she was lip synching, and she did it in a way where it was obvious every time. And come on she wasn’t even dancing all that much for her to give reason for it, and what little she did sing was inaudible by far. I hear constant stories about Britney, but at least her music is clear and she dances her heart out to back it up, unlike the slips and slides of Janet.
