Sondre Lerche Song ‘Dear Laughing Doubters’ Featured In ‘Dinner For Schmucks’
Sondre Lerche co-wrote and sang the song ‘Dear Laughing Doubters’, which concludes the new Steve Carrel, Paul Rudd, Zack Galifinakis and Jemaine Clement starring movie ‘Dinner For Schmucks’, directed by Jay Roach. The film opens in the US on Friday (July 30). Check Amazon.com to buy the digital track when it becomes available. Sondre wrote about penning the song on his MySpace on Monday:
Now, writing words for a song in a movie is the hardest thing cause they always start out telling you, don’t feel the need to comment on any of the action or characters on the screen - just knock yourself out! So you start off free and random, try to find direction and feeling without making contact with what’s happening in the scene.
Needles to say, the moment you present your first draft everybody starts having very specific opinions about it all and with each new draft it’s either too random, too on-the-nose, too sad, too sweet, too busy, too bad. Now things are getting exciting cause you’re discussing the endless possibilities and details of the song with people who are even more deeply invested in the project than you are yourself. The director, Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet The Parents), had lots of helpful and nuanced thoughts on how songs represent characters and their view on life. Of course this part of the process can be a frustrating too, cause you’re constantly being challenged and pushed to make it work better in the context of the film.
