Gin Wigmore On ‘Gravel & Wine’, Butch Walker & Acoustic Shows

Gin Wigmore chains on the arm

Gin Wigmore came by the studios at 104.3 MYfm to talk with Damien Fahey about her song style, recording her latest album ‘Gravel & Wine’, working with Butch Walker on the project, and challenging herself doing acoustic sets.

Talking about how she found her soulful, bluegrass sound, Gin said, “Well, I went to America, and I kind of found it here. I spent about a month and a half cruising around Mississippi and Nashville, and Alabama, and figured out what this whole blues thing is about.”

On her sound prior to coming to America, Gin said, “It was a little bit different. It was probably a little more poppy, I guess, maybe. It’s definitely more gritty now and it’s got that great kind of dirty, strong drums and kind of swagger to it now I think.”

Asked about collaborating with Butch Walker on her second album ‘Gravel & Wine’, Gin said, “It was great. He’s very relaxed and he’s got great integrity and we’re very like minded and we like the same things, basically, so it made it very easy.”

Quizzed about doing acoustic shows on a radio tour, she said, “It’s great. It’s really nice. It’s cool to challenge yourself, I think that’s what you always need to do in any area in your life, so the fact that this is out of my comfort zone is really fun for me.”

Gin Wigmore updated fans on her blog at MySpace (@ginwigmore) on Tuesday (December 22), discussing what she’d been up to lately, including a tour with Josh Pyke, becoming a vegetarian, and wishing them a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The New Zealand singer songwriter tells readers:

I’m sitting here now as I write to you and just thinking about everything I will need this summer, as it’s now only a few hours till I board the plane again and hit NZ for what will be a very awesome few weeks touring the North Island with the legendary Dave Dobbyn. I will fill you in on those stories in the New Year. So until then my lovelies, have an ace Christmas with loads of booze and pressies and of course get Holy Smoke blaring on the stereo.

Have a safe New Year’s and don’t knock out any front teeth like poor old me last year! Be safe, be merry and keep an eye out for a very exciting announcement I have for all the kiwi contingent in early Jan. Till then, I’m sending you all a huge bunch of my love and thank you all a million times over for the incredible support I have received this year.

Stepped off my recording cloud 2 days ago, back to Australia.. LA becoming a distant memory. Don’t really know what to do with myself in Aus after a full on few months of making some wicked music, playing shows, hanging out with crazy LA peops and eating In and Out burger too regularly.. Good to be home, feels pretty weird though, really chill. You’re going to love the new record though, we are currently figuring out all the gorgeous packaging for you to enjoy and other little goodies I can find for you to include in this record. I have quite a few shows coming up, and I can’t WAIT to see you all there..
Much love,

Gin Wigmore Begins Recording Debut Album

Gin Wigmore checked in with fans on her blog at MySpace (@ginwigmore) on Tuesday (May 12), talking about her time in Los Angeles and where she’s at with her debut album. The New Zealand singer/songwriter tells readers:

I have now officially started recording my very first record. My days are consisting of running down the beach in the morning, diving in the glorious sea (saw dolphins yesterday!) then taking a cruisy drive over Malibu Canyon, listening to this amazing 60’s station, to arrive at my producer Mike Elizondo’s house. For the past few days we have been writing some awesome songs together and next week we go into Capitol Studios to record!!! I could go on and on, but I won’t as you have probably all had quite the fill on me by now! So keep me updated on what is happening with you. Keep in touch and get ready for a great album, promise!

Gin Wigmore Survives Rats & Lovers’ Quarrels In America

Gin Wigmore checked in with fans on her blog at MySpace (@ginwigmore) on Monday (February 23), talking about how she celebrated the new year because it’s been awhile since her last post, and her time in America. The New Zealand singer songwriter tells readers:

Flew back through the States. NYC for a night, got seriously lost and had a nasty rat crawl up my leg in the subway, yip subways are officially septic! I did some writing in freezing Minneapolis and dined alone each night. Yes, a bit of a loser move BUT everyone felt real sorry for me and this one bartender had me working as his guinea pig for trying out new flavors of cocktail Margaritas… How good!

Wrote some awesome tunes in LA too, I’ll be putting them on the record and you are personally guaranteed to love them. I stayed in this real ghetto joint in Santa Monica for a while, moved rooms a couple times due to a few hardcore night fights between loved ones. A true LA experience.

Gin Wigmore Talks About Work On Her Debut Album

Gin Wigmore, seen here wearing a tie, talks about her EP and what to expect on her full-length album

New Zealand singer-songwriter Gin Wigmore chatted with Kiwibox Senior Editor Steven about why she calls herself the “female David Gray”, comparisons to other artists, how she ended up with a tattoo on the back of her upper left arm, choosing to record the disc in Los Angeles, what we can expect on her full-length debut and how it will differ from her EP.

On the attention her EP has been getting, Gin said, “It’s a scary thing when you make any kind of recording or any kind of music. You’ve just gotta see where it goes. You have to not put expectations on it at all. You head out there and hope for the best. The positive response to it has been fantastic. I’m really stoked. I don’t know, I’m lucky this year.”

On her musical influences, “I’m a bit of a rube actually. I listen to a lot of soundtracks, ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Les Miserables’ and things like that. ESPF and David Gray were probably my two favorites growing up. It was always not that cool bringing my tapes of ‘Les Miserables’ and ESPF to school at 13 years old. I love any kind of music with some real powerful lyrics and good passion.”

Asked what fans can expect on the full-length, she said, “More songs for a start. I don’t know. I kind of have a vision for my first album to have a real urgency for its songs. You get the best out of the whole album. Eleven songs and each song there’s no kind of filler hopefully, which is what I’m trying to do. Just a bunch of very good songs, really across the board, having a bit of an experiment with all kinds of genres and musicians and musical instruments and all kinds of stuff. It’s gonna be a mix.”

Gin Wigmore Checks In From ‘Shady Run Down Hostel’ In Slovakia

Gin Wigmore updated fans on her blog at MySpace (@ginwigmore) on Friday (January 9). The Sydney, Australia based alternative pop singer tells readers:

Hi all my dear MySpace mates!
I feel like I have been neglecting you all so much as my computer efforts have been pretty few and far between this holiday season. First of all, I hope you all had a brilliant Christmas and partied the night away to see in the New Year. I was in Finland for my first ever white Christmas, happy to report I didn’t eat any Blitzen the reindeer, but went dog sledding and snow mobile riding through alpine forests which was very very cool. I spent New Year dancing to very dodgy Romanian trance music in this tiny town called Brasov. Pretty hilarious, but piked at about 2am from way too many reds. I am currently in Slovakia at this very shady run down hostel.. got to love travelling! Anyway, I was desperate to find a computer to say a much needed hello and a catch up. I have been getting all your kind holiday cheer and stories, which have loved reading today. Oh and have been getting some great tunes written, so the up coming record is looking good guys! Check out this song called “Brother” By Smashproof, with a wee feature from me, it’s a newie and I would love to hear what you think! All my love to you, be safe, enjoy 09!

Gin xx
