Janelle Monae stopped by the Recording Academy headquarters in Santa Monica last month for their new series, “5 Questions With…” Before discussing her 2008 Grammy nod, the critics reaction to ‘The ArchAndroid’ album, and how her musical theater background has influenced her live performances, Janelle performed ‘Sincerely Jane’ and ‘Smile’.

Nylon TV spoke with Janelle Monae about Coco Chanel, drama and James Brown. “I don’t realize idolize too many people when it comes to style,” Monae says in the video. “But I do appreciate a very timeless look. Something that is transcendent, classic, like Katharine Hepburn. I like ‘Coco Before Chanel’. Janelle Monae appeared on KIIS FM’s New Music Show with DJ Skee in Los Angeles the other day. She talked about the sound of the new album, having the ability to see beauty in things others cannot, wanting to take her show to Prague, Paris and even outerspace, and not knowing how to categorize her music. “I like to this of this music as a motion picture for the mind,” Janelle said of ‘The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III)’. “Also I think this music is very transformative. Was very blessed 2 have my Wondaland Arts Society Family sitting at the table w/me. Thankful WE could share a moment like that 2gether.
We have a lot more work to do. More songs to write. Mistakes to make, but we’re encouraged to continue on w/ the journey. The mission.
