Colbie Caillat Discusses Gavin DeGraw Tour, “American Idol” Rejection

Colbie Caillat at a photo shoot

Colbie Caillat called The Big J Show on KRSQ Hot 101.9 in Laurel, Montana to talk about her concert at MontanaFair with Gavin DeGraw, if she gets recognized often in public, how she was rejected by ‘American Idol’, what she does for fun when she’s not doing music, and more.

On being recognized in public, Colbie said, “It’s different. If I’m playing a show there, I’m bound to be recognized because they just saw me in that setting, but if I’m just at a random fair, like I wasn’t performing or anything, I’d maybe get recognized a few times but definitely not as much as when I just played a show.”

On touring with Gavin, she said, “We knew each other before and we’re actually writing a song together at my house back in southern California. We were having such a good time we said we should plan a tour together this summer. We didn’t know it would actually end up working out, but our managers made it happen and it’s been so great. His band and crew and my band and crew and everyone gets along so well. We feel like we’re at summer camp and we’re gonna start performing our song together. We actually just finished writing it a couple of days ago.”

On being rejected by ‘American Idol’ before finding success, Colbie said, “I was not upset at all because I was nervous, I was shy and I didn’t want to audition, so I did not do a good audition, I’ll just be very honest. I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my god, they’re so stupid, they passed me up.’ It wasn’t like that at all. It wasn’t the right time for me and I needed a lot of growing and a little bit more experience before I was going to be taken serious, I think. A year later, my friend had put my songs up on MySpace, and I got a following and a fan base from that and that’s what got me a record deal within a year and a half.”

Colbie Caillat will release her first album of holiday music entitled ‘Christmas In The Sand’ on October 23rd via Republic Records. The album features four original Christmas songs, including the title track, which the Malibu singer songwriter penned along with Jason Reeves and Kara DioGuardi. In addition, Caillat recorded her take on holiday classics such as ‘Merry Christmas Baby’, featuring Brad Paisley on vocals and guitar, and ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’, featuring vocals from Gavin DeGraw. Colbie’s father Ken Caillat produced the album.

“I have so many warm and sunny memories of Christmas, literally and figuratively,” Colbie said. “Christmas means family, tradition, and the spirit of giving and sharing, but when you grow up in California, it can also mean sunshine and a beach day! I wanted to share all these wonderful feelings with my fans. It’s an album I’ve always wanted to make and was it was more gratifying having made it with my dad.”

Colbie made the song choices while vacationing a small island in Bali. “I was staying in this tiny hut,” Colbie explained. “It was beautiful and sunny and the people were warm and wonderful. But I spent a lot of time listening to Christmas songs – and picked the ones I love to sing most of all. It was perfect for an album called Christmas in the Sand.” Other originals on the album are ‘Mistletoe’, written by Colbie, Stacy Blue and Mikal Blue, ‘Everyday is Christmas’, written by Colbie, Jason and Kara, and Happy Christmas, written by Colbie and Toby Gad.

Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw spoke with Newsday by phone ahead of their show at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, New York on June 7th, where Colbie confessed to having stage fright when her performances are being broadcast.

“Whenever I’m performing anywhere where there’s cameras out or anything like that, I get really, really nervous,” the 27-year-old explained. “I always have a little bit of stage fright. At shows where I warm up [after] a couple of songs, I have a blast, but … when I perform one song, I’m freaking out to the point that, right before, I’m like, ‘Can I just cancel? Do I even have to go up there?'”

Colbie Caillat Tries To Write Optimistic Songs

Colbie Caillat spoke with Boston Music Spotlight about her propensity to write happy music, how that attitude is influenced by growing up in Southern California, being able to play shows with crowds that now know the music on her new album ‘All of You’, and being a fan of the east coast.

“When I write songs, I do try to make them optimistic,” the 26-year-old said. “When I’m feeling sad or upset or a friend is going through a hard time, I write about it - I write about what’s going on. But I change it halfway through the song and try to make it how I want it to be or how it should be or how it can be if we make changes. I don’t like feeling that way for too long, so I want to turn things around as quick as possible and make them happy. And even if it doesn’t work for me or someone, maybe it will work for one person.”

Colbie Caillat tells the Journal Sentinel that her boyfriend and guitarist Justin Young creates some advantages during songwriting.

“We’re comfortable around each other and we’re always together, so we both can easily collaborate without worrying what the other person thinks,” the 26-year-old singer songwriter said. “It’s easy to write a song about a relationship with the person you’re in it with. We tapped into every moment and memory we had together from the beginning.”

Colbie released her third album ‘All of You’ in July on Universal Republic.
