Kina Grannis Talks Music, Sings ‘Oh Father’

Kina Grannis 2015

Before kicking off her tour behind her latest album ‘Elements’, singer songwriter Kina Grannis visited the AllMusic studios to perform a solo acoustic version of her song ‘Oh Father’. In addition, Grannis also offered some insight about how she finds meaning in songs and why ambitions are meant to be pursued. Kina’s tour kicked off tonight in North Carolina.

“For me, growing up, music was so important for me,” Kina explained. “It was such a big part of my life. You always wonder what exactly it meant to the artist, but more importantly it’s what it meant to you and the story you built around it and fit it to your life. For my music, that’s what is really important to me. I want everyone to find meaning for themselves. For the video, it’s the same thing. I think that’s the cool thing about art. It means something to one person, but it could mean something else to everyone else and still be helpful and meaningful for them.”

Kina Grannis Discusses Super Bowl Ad, Being Major Label-less

January 18, 2012 - Kina Grannis spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about her decision to give up a major label deal with Interscope and go at it alone.

“Major labels still have a role, but people can just do it without them now,” Grannis explained.

As for becoming an overnight star after winning a Doritos Super Bowl contest and having her music played during the most watched television event in 2008, Grannis said, “Getting your music video played during the Super Bowl is pretty amazing. But the biggest thing going into that, was let me use this as an opportunity to put everything I have into sharing my music during the two months of the contest. That’s when I started my YouTube [page].”

Kina Grannis ‘In Your Arms’ Video

Kina Grannis 'In Your Arms' video behind the scenes

Kina Grannis is out with the music video to her new single ‘In Your Arms’, which uses 288,000 jelly beans and took 22 months, 1,357 hours and 30 people to create. The song is off the American singer songwriter’s latest album ‘Stairwells’.

“The whole thing I was hoping for is I wanted to make a video that’s very unique and really creative and feels handmade. Something that stands on its own and would be interesting that people might want to share with people,” Kina said about the Greg Jardin directed video. “I was out to dinner one night and I get a call saying, ‘Alright, I got this idea’. Okay, what is it? ‘Have you seen these pieces of art made just out of jellybeans?’ No, but it sounds amazing. I’m like, ‘It sounds amazing. I don’t know if it’s possible.’ I didn’t really know what to expect. You can try to picture Jelly Bellys moving around and painting a picture, but nothing was quite like seeing what it actually turned out to be.”
