Lenka Comments On Bao Thy’s Cover Of ‘The Show’

Lenka checked in with fans on her blog at MySpace (@lenkamusic) on Thursday (October 8), addressing her recent visit to Vietnam and a press conference comment she made about Vietnamese pop singer Bao Thy covering Lenka’s hit song ‘The Show’ without proper attribution. The Australian pop singer writes:

To clarify, I don’t know much about this girl, only what my fans have told me and how upset they are about it.

Personally, I love the idea of people doing covers. I even printed sheet music of ‘The Show’ to help people learn the song better! However, usually when people do a cover, they write the name of the song-writer and give them credit for their creativity… For example, with my own cover versions of Modest Mouse, M. Ward and The Zombies, I always mention these artists when I play the songs.

I’m really sorry if i offended anyone about my remarks, and I hope that in the future everyone can enjoy music together and be fair about it. I respect other artists creating music and I just hope for that respect in return.

Lenka Aimed For Music That Makes You Happy On Debut

Lenka spoke with Jordan of andPOP about her first album, the kind of music she wanted to create, and also taught him some Australian lingo.

“When I set about making my first solo album, I was thinking about what kind of thing I wanted to put out to the world,” she explained. “I was thinking about my music collection and those handful of songs, there’s usually like one or two per album, that make you feel happy. It’s pretty rare. Most of the music I like is pretty melancholy. It’s a bit of a journey. It kind of goes darker and slow for a little while, but mostly it’s like, Hey!”

Asked if it was hard writing uplifting songs, she confessed, “That was another reason why. Musically I think it’s because you’re mostly dealing with mostly major chords and it’s going into sort of nursery rhyme territory and really sugary pop territory, so you’re sort of walking a fine line between it sounding too simple or too babyish.”

Dressing Up With Lenka

Pop artist Lenka

Chictopia.com spoke with Lenka in a Q&A, asking the Australian singer songwriter what were her favorite things to dress up as when she was a child. “I had a few different archetypes that I would dress up as,” she responded. “I had a great dress-up box because my mom was a hippie so she had an amazing Indian skirt and such so I will put all those on and dress up as a gypsy. I loved wearing high heels when I was little. I lived in a bush so it was a quite of juxtaposition. I would also enjoy wearing shoulder pads and putting into boobs. I used to watch ‘Days of Our Lives’ and then going to the mirror and try to recreate the make up—putting blush and orange eye shadows. Awful, awful styles.”
