Mike Posner Discusses Second Album, Justin Bieber Collaboration

Mike Posner in the studio

Mike Posner spoke with Digital Spy in a Q&A, where the ‘Cooler Than Me’ singer talked about his work with Reebok, not having a date for his second album yet, being honored to work with Justin Bieber on ‘Boyfriend’, if the Canadian pop star’s song is the sound fans can expect on the sophomore set, Cher Lloyd not getting the credit she deserves, and some secret collaborations with big name artists people can expect soon.

“My work definitely has the same kind of hip-hop influence,” Posner said when asked about his new music compared to the Bieb. “I grew up a hip-hop kid doing mix-tapes. I think my music is maybe a bit older than Justin’s. I can talk about things that he doesn’t, he can’t. To put it in more concrete terms, like, my music contains sex, drugs and sometimes rock ‘n’ roll, and his doesn’t.”

Mike Posner: Justin Bieber Is A Really Cool Kid, Not A Corny Guy

‘Boyfriend’ writer and producer Mike Posner tells MTV News that Bieber has what it takes to pull off collaborations with Lil Wayne and Drake, both of whom make appearances on the Canadian pop star’s upcoming ‘Believe’ album. “I think we’ve all known Justin since he was 13, and that’s not the kid I was in the studio with anymore,” Posner said. “He’s an 18-year-old. He skateboards with Lil Wayne and hangs out with Lil Twist. Those are his homeys. And he listens to hip-hop, and he’s a really cool kid. He’s not a corny guy.”

Mike Posner Touts Democratization Of The Music Industry

Mike Posner make an appearance on Walmart Risers, where the pop singer talked about his ‘Bow Chicka Wow Wow’ track with Lil Wayne, having a blast shooting the video with Weezy, calling his album ’31 Minutes to Takeoff’ because something happens 31 minutes on the album, how having troubles finding interest in the beats he was writing prompted him to use them himself, having really different musical tastes than his parents, how doing college shows is special for him just a year out of college himself, and more.

“Today is a really exciting time for the music industry. I like to use the word democratization because it’s really cheap to make music and record it like what became a song that was a hit around the world I recorded with software I got for free and a $200 microphone,” Posner said, presumably referring to ‘Cooler Than Me’. “That’s really exciting. That couldn’t have happened 10 years ago. For aspiring artists and people who ask me for advice, I say make music that is good first of all and unique, and give it to people instead of people in suits and office buildings in New York choosing what the masses listen to, the masses decide now.”

Mike Posner On His Gentleman Status & 2 Guy Duets

In:Demand’s Alex and Lucy spoke to Mike Posner at Radio City Live 96.7 in Liverpool, England earlier this month. The American pop singer talked about being honored to be performing later, his “Pose” nickname, what gives him gentleman status, sticking around to see other artists perform, and what he thinks about a duet with a guy.

“When you have two guys singing their hearts out, it’s weird to me,” Posner said. “It should either be a guy and a girl…” When the radio hosts pointed out he’s worked with Lil Wayne and Pitbull, Posner said that’s different because they’re rappers.
