Vanessa Carlton Enjoyed Running Over A Piano

Vanessa Carlton talks about her third album 'Heroes Thieves' and running over a piano in the 'Nolita Fairytale' music video

andPOP.com caught up with Vanessa Carlton for a discussion on her third album ‘Heroes and Thieves’, which sees the singer songwriter depart from the image of her breakout debut ‘A Thousand Miles’ by crushing the infamous piano on wheels in the video for the disc’s lead single ‘Nolita Fairytale’.

“I felt it was the perfect parlay into the new chapter, resurrecting the old image of the moving piano, which was lovely, but in order for me to move forward, I guess I had to run it over,” she laughed. “It was just really fun to hit a piano with a car.”

Carlton calls ‘Heroes and Thieves’ “a musical story book. It’s really my first concept record.” Read more.

Vanessa Carlton Performs In New York, Gets Slammed In NY Post

The New York Post reports Vanessa Carlton’s performance at Joe’s Pub on Tuesday night (November 20) and “was all over the place” according to a disappointed concertgoer. “She was babbling incoherently and blaming it on antibiotics,” the source explained. “She forgot her song lyrics several times and even stopped singing completely during one song.”

But is Carlton being unfairly smeared? Three songs from the concert have been posted online, and show no signs of troubles. A review of the show by HoppersMusic.com did indicate that Carlton forgot lyrics to ‘All Is Well’, a track that didn’t get released on her new CD ‘Heroes & Thieves’ and thus probably was unfamiliar to the singer/songwriter, blaming it on a cold pill she’d taken earlier. But otherwise, there was no mentions of any errors. Check out the three performances below the fold.

Vanessa Carlton Looking Forward To ’07

December 30, 2006 - Vanessa checked in with fans on her official web site’s forum on December 19th. “Hello all. Every year around this time my family and I go to Arizona to ride horse, hike, and soak in hot water with the occasional margarita,” Carlton writes. “It’s great. I am looking forward to next year with high hopes and genuine excitement. I’ve also found such a sense of peace over the past year. I hope the songs on this next record reflect these last two years in the most musical way possible. Just to remind everyone (in case you read an inaccurate article that makes you question) I am of course continuing on with my Vanessa sound (Ew, I hate 3rd person talk). Hopefully, I’m just becoming a better version of myself. There will not be any inauthentic, desperate to sell, musical sound changes goin on over her. Also, I’m gonna take the plunge and officially call this next record ‘Heroes and Thieves’ (will explain title next year). I love it love it. Also, I feel particularly thankful to have such attentive fans. Seriously. You guys are why I put my music down on tape in the first place. K. Gotta get on me horse. xxoxo v”

Gotti: Carlton Has Cred With ‘My Culture’

November 1, 2006 - The Inc. boss Irv Gotti has posted several messages on Vanessa Carlton’s official web site forum since introducing himself last weekend. In one message, Gotti wrote, “It’s funny though. Because I roll the windows down and blast ‘Ordinary Day’ (which I believe is arguable one of the hottest songs she has ever made. The way she is flowing and singing on that. And the words are all very special to me) and sing it at the top of my lungs. People in the hip hop world look inside and be like hey thats Irv Gotti. And then there like what the hell is he blasting in his Maybach. And I say that’s Vanessa Carlton. She is the SH**! Funny thing is alot of people from my culture already know and love V. It’s weird to me sometimes. It’s mostly from ‘A Thousand Miles’. When we went to London to go hang out with Jay-Z. I know she was a lil shocked with all the ‘Thuggish’ type guys that me and Jay know saying how they love her music. hahahahaha.”

Irv Gotti Checks In On Vanessa Carlton’s Forum

Irv Gotti posted the following message on Vanessa Carlton’s official web site forum on Saturday (October 28): “Hey everyone. This is Irv Gotti. The president of The Inc Records (formerly Murder Inc Records) home of Ja Rule, Ashanti, my young R&B singer Lloyd and now Vanessa Carlton. This is the 1st time I have ever posted a message or anything like that on a website. I did not even tell V I was gonna do this. I wanted to surprise her. Hahahahahaha. But I wanted to because I believe this is the site that really broke the story of me and V teaming up. I believe V posted something on here letting you guys know she signed with me. So I decided to let my V family here something from me, since I don’t know how much you may know about me or my company. I just want everyone to know that I believe V is 1 of the most talented singer/songwriters I have ever met in my life. And I can assure everyone here. Her album sounds incredible and for the 1st time in my professional career, I am totally trusting my artist to deliver her vision. I am gonna be the Co-Pilot on this one. And I am usually a Dictator with my acts. That’s how much I believe in our V. If your wondering how me and V came together, stay tuned to MTV. I think they will be doing a news piece on us shortly. Because basically everyone is pretty much interested in how we came together. Which is a beautiful thing. You want everyone wanting to know about whats going on with V. I will say this. And I am not an over the top religious person. But GOD brought us together. :) Funny thing also is after she completely blew me away with her singing and playing that piano in Doug Morris’s office. I went to my top A&R person in the world. The one I talk to the most about artist, to see if there HOT or not. My 14 year old daughter Angie. Hahahahaha. Who told me V was off the chain. And knew all her music and was saying, ‘Daddy you have to sign her’. Hahahah. Well bye for now. I just wanted to let you guys know. I am just like you in believing in V. She totally has me caught in her MAGIC! And I will be doing everything humanly possibly to make the world see exactly what we see. That V is the SH*****! Talk to you guys again soon. Love Irv” Carlton later confirmed: “The post from Irv Gotti inc is the real thing!! He didn’t tell me he was gonna do this. Just want you guys to know, that is an authentic post. I’m such a lucky chick to have someone like Irv. What kind of label head takes the time to post on an artist’s website. aww v”

Vanessa Carlton Returns To The Recording Studio This Month

October 3, 2006 - Vanessa checked in with fans on her official web site’s forum on Sunday (October 1). “Hi my sweet peeps,” V writes. “So I go back into the studio in LA in October to do another batch of songs for the record. Very refreshed and ready. I anticipate a spring release. I recently signed with Irv Gotti at The Inc at Universal. Doug Morris and Jolene Cherry are also overseeing the project. I’m working with amazingly passionate, MUSICAL people. I love that it’s such an unexpected move too. No my name has not been changed to ‘V’, but V is my nickname for some and has been for a while. Will check in from LA. xo v”

Just Call Her V

September 30, 2006 - The New York Daily News reports Vanessa Carlton, who just signed with Irv Gotti’s new venture with Universal Motown Records, is now to be called “V” instead of Vanessa. “V is an old family nickname of Vanessa’s, and Irv thought it was a practical decision to use it,” explained an insider. “Vanessa says V has always been her name, so it’s not really a name change.” But considering ‘High School Musical’ star Vanessa Hudgens just released her debut album ‘V’, it may cause confusion.

Killer. Also the Snow Patrol album is excellent. So nice to see their song doing well. Currently, in a brisk SF, writing songs and planning out my 2007. You will all be so pleased!!! I’m sure of it. Lots of good stuff to come. xo v”

Also this website is gonna get updated. I don’t know about you but I’m so sick of seeing myself all pearly slumped in the corner. ; ) xo v”

Man, I hope they use this stuff. It’s super good. Stephan [Jenkins of Third Eye Blind, her boyfriend] and I worked on it together in his new bad ass SF studio. Musicals rock when the songs are really good. Anyway just one of many things going on. I’m gonna go to Spain on Monday for 10 days and will be drinking lots of wine and buying lots of baubles for friends. Barcelona and then on to Fromentara. Travel has become one of my favorite things. From Aus to New Zealand. I especially like going alone. If you haven’t done this yet… You gotta do it. Perhaps, I’ll be inspired over there and write weird Spanish songs. Woohoo. Talk soon guys, xo v”

Vanessa Carlton Previews ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ Appearance

Vanessa Carlton posted a message to fans on her official forum alerting them to her appearance on an upcoming episode of ABC’s ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ She writes, “I had the pleasure of being on my favorite TV show (aside from ‘Lost’ of course). So this show kills me every time. I saw it at the gym once and started to cry and almost fell off the treadmill. I promptly left. Went home. Watched the end. And had an existential crisis while balling my eyes out. This show is soooooo good. I was able to play a few songs in honor of the Py family. The show airs April 30th at 9pm. I sang ‘A Thousand Miles’ and ‘White Houses’. I started to choke up in ‘ATM’ (which is impressive cause I’ve sung it so many friggin times), because I saw so many people in the small crowd cry. I realized ‘ATM’ can actually be about death if you want it to be. I had this realization while singing it, which is what brought on the tears. Anyway, guys I hope you watch the show and love it. The story is heartbreaking as usual. BTW, I think my dog is almost totally potty trained. I know it’s pathetic considering he’s 10 months but he’s a dachshund and supposedly they’re really hard. peace v”

Vanessa Carlton Checks In From Australia

February 25, 2006 - Vanessa checked in with fans on her official forum Friday (February 24). Carlton writes:

Gday mates. Within one minute of meeting me every single Aussie changes my name to Ness. Love it. They are the most efficient speakers in the world. I can barely understand them, and yet I envy their sneaky speaking ways. Back on the road with Stevie [Nicks]. It’s always the best. I so enjoy being a part of her world. Did I tell you all that she gave me the dress she wore on the back of Bella Donna! Ridiculous.

I went surfing for the first time the other day in Gold Coast. I giggled the whole time. I got up a bunch of times too. My cute instructor said I was a ‘natural’ despite the fact that I was being dragged along the bottom of the ocean for most of the time ; ) anyway, all is well here. The majority of the album is done. Loving it. Working on artwork. Can’t wait for you all to hear it. I think you’ll be proud.

xoxo v
PS: I miss my dog more than any human. Is that wrong?

Every year we go horseback riding in Arizona. Big fun. Though I’ve ingested so much dust I think I need some kind of lung cleaning. Also, I forgot to mention that I finished half of my album this month. Linda Perry is fantastic and genuine and really inspiring. We had a blast. I had a whirlwind studio moment and finished 5 songs in 2 weeks. You guys are gonna be psyched. Loving this stuff. Thanks again for stickin by. Love you guys. Peace v”

What Do Cher, Norah Jones, Britney & Madonna Have In Common?

Contributed anonymously:

Well these four ladies have typically defined the last 5 years of this decade-a decade brewing to be one where “female artists” have a growing importance in almost all field of human endeavor. Through the media we can now see the increasingly equal participation of both males & females.

I have selected these four artists for they have the most important achievement in popular music which is through innovation; Innovation that has lead to the revolution of what pop music really means-music popular to the masses. To add to this achievement all of them have also broken sales records worldwide.

Going to our four heroines of music let us start with the senior member-Cher.She has led the way to today’s so called ‘versatile performers’. She was successful in her music, television and movie career (Oscar winner). Nowadays, artist who have taken her cue are J.Lo, Eminem, & Will Smith among others. She is also the comeback queen when she released ‘Believe’ which has the record for biggest world no.1 with an accumulated airplay+sales points of over 10,000 points. Mediatraffic (with the aid of IFPI, RIAA, ARIA & others) formed the United World Charts in 1998 to track global sales of albums & singles as well as airplay and downloads for singles.

Madonna is a female icon who paved the way for female artists to be more expressive in their artistry. She flourished in MTV and has shown other females that they can enrich their music through video. She now holds the Eurocharts record for the first artist to simultaneously hold the no.1 position in every music format available there (singles sales, singles airplay, albums sales, album downloads & singles downloads). This happened when Hung Up was on its 2nd week & COAD was in its 1st week of release in Europe.

Britney Spears has introduced the teen-pop edgy image to music. While teen pop has been in existence long before, Britney has taken it to another level of mainstream pop. Soon after other teen artists like Christina Aguilera, Mandy Moore, Jesse McCartney, Lindsay Lohan, Hillary Duff & others followed her footsteps with a hope of reaching the same success. Britney Spears album ‘Baby One More Time’ is already the biggest selling debut album in history selling over 25 million worldwide (15x platinum in the US).

Last but not the least is Norah Jones. Norah departed from the bubble-gum teen music so prevalent during the late 90’s & early 2000. She stood her ground and mesmerized the world with her soothing ‘adult contemporary’ music that bent away from some over-produced tracks during that time. Thus, she has received a lot of awards in the process.

Her success has inspired the likes Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton. Norah has also broken the record for adult contemporary album with the biggest first week world sales at 1.9 million copies sold according to the United World Charts.

Women in music have truly gone a long way & with these four innovative female artists we have a lot more things to look forward to.

Was Vanessa Carlton Mistaken For Michelle Branch?

Vanessa Carlton 'Harmonium'

After paparazzi at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards shouted “Michelle! Michelle!” as Vanessa Carlton was getting out of her Toyota Prius to walk the red carpet, “she got pissed and said, ‘I am NOT Michelle Branch,’ and turned around,” a spy tells The New York Daily News. “Her escort said something to calm her down, so she turned back around and flipped the paparazzi the bird with both hands!” A rep for the singer called the claims a “fabrication.”

Vanessa Carlton Updates Fans

October 20, 2005 - Vanessa posted the following message to fans on her official forum October 12th:

I was about to leave the city to do a PSA for Z100, but I’ve been flooded back to my very clean house. I ran 18 miles this weekend and actually enjoyed myself. My soundtrack was the new Fiona record (love it), Postal Service, and the old Franz Ferdinand. It got me through the pain.

I got a new puppy named victor. We are all convinced he is a direct descendent of Lord Byron. He is proud and victorious and has no idea how small he is (a long haired dachshund). I’ve kind of been leading the life of leisure of late. Writing, sleeping, running and hangin with Victor and friends.

Looking forward to finishing another album and hopefully sharing it with lots of you.

I’ve never felt so complete. Thank you for hangin out even when there’s not much goin on. xo v

I have to say I welcome the challenge of having to prove myself every night to a group of fans that may not know me. In the end, it’s always so rewarding. Somehow my marathon training hasn’t suffered a step despite the tour. I swear I’m gonna be able to burn rubber soon. I’m quick. Will start work on new record in August. Meanwhile I’m practicing the new ones at every show. I promise that this time around, everyone will know that I have an album out! You guys are my rocks. Talk soon, v.”
