Clay Aiken Visits ‘Today’

Clay Aiken visited with the ‘Today’ show fourth hour hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford to discuss his newly released fourth album ‘On My Way Here’ and his plum role in Broadway’s ‘Spamalot’. The ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up said he hadn’t watched the FOX reality show that spawned his career in three years. “I sound horrible saying this. Do you go to your high school football games? You know after a while, I’m here because of ‘American Idol’, and I’ll negate that.” Clay also discussed his first job at Winn-Dixie, never getting tired of singing, and how ‘As Long As We’re Here’ is his favorite song on the album. Clay Aiken Fans Equated With Late ’60s ‘Lawrence Welk Show’ Viewers

Clay Aiken 'On My Way Here' album cover

Jim Farber of The New York Daily News reviewed Clay Aiken’s new album ‘On My Way Here’, and was less than impressed with the ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up’s latest effort, giving it only 1 out of 5 stars, and catching immediate heat from the legions of loyal Claymates in comments posted at the newspaper’s web site. “Most of the songs Aiken chose present him as a lonely and longing figure, a role meant to make him even more sympathetic to a certain sect,” Farber writes. “Essentially, they’re the latter-day equivalents to those who clung to ‘The Lawrence Welk Show’ long after it lost its cultural resonance in the late ’60s. To those folks - the last ostriches of the sexual revolution - Aiken remains an island of sanity, a final bastion of proud, neutered uncool.” Read more, including the angry reaction, here.

No Rumors For Clay Aiken To Clear Up, Except Why He Went Blonde

Clay Aiken tells OK! magazine he has no rumors he wants to clear up, including that long speculated and much discussed one about his sexual preference. “At this point everyone knows everything,” the ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up explained. “I had a fan a few years ago say ‘I know everything about you except for what your favorite color is.’ In that case, I’m never telling anyone my favorite color. I’ve stuck to it for five years - no one knows. For the most part, people know quite a bit. After five years, people have figured out as much as there is to know.”

As Aiken nears his 30th birthday, he did hint at why he decided to go blonde. “I don’t really know why we did this,” he laughed. “With the dark hair, I felt I was looking old. I’ll be completely honest with you. I’m sure I’m going to go back to the dark at some point just because the blond, I don’t know, whatever. When I get my hair out from under the ['Spamalot'] wig, I’ll be going back to the brown.” Read more.

Clay Aiken Won’t Tour This Summer

Fans of Clay Aiken won’t be happy to hear the ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up doesn’t plan on hitting the road soon in support of his new album ‘On My Way Here’, out Tuesday. Instead, the 29-year-old will be enjoying the summer back home in North Carolina. “We’re not touring actually,” Aiken tells SheKnows.com. “I have not had two days off in a row since I don’t know when. I know since September, between the Christmas tour, and then I did a UNICEF trip to Mexico, I came straight from there to New York to do rehearsals for ‘Spamalot’. I’m in ‘Spamalot’ until May 4 and then I’ll take the fifth off and then from then on we’ll be promoting the new album for a few weeks straight. But after that, I’m going to sit down for a little bit.”

Aiken continued, “I’m going to just sit. To be honest, I haven’t had any time off in the summer in five years. There was the ‘Idol’ tour, and then I toured on my own the next two years straight. The three years after that I have been steadily on the road during the summer. I’m interested in seeing what North Carolina’s like during the summer. I’ve forgotten.”

‘On My Way Here’ Becomes A Theme For Clay Aiken

Clay Aiken spoke with Ricardo Baca of the Denver Post about his new single and title track off his new album, ‘On My Way Here’, a track written by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. Aiken said when he and producer Jaymes came across the track, it made such an impact with the ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up that they scrapped most of the previous songs they’d demoed. “When we heard that one a year ago, we changed the whole direction of the record,” Aiken said. “We had no theme before. We were just going to make an album. But with this song, everything rang so true. Right there we started looking for songs that talked about something that I had experienced in the last five years or something that explored a feeling I’d had.” Read more.

Clay Aiken Takes Control With ‘On My Way Here’

The News & Observer spoke with Clay Aiken about his new album ‘On My Way Here’, which sees the ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up have his first chance at taking control over which songs to sing on a release. With that freedom comes some responsibility, but Aiken tells Matt Ehlers he isn’t feeling any added pressure. “The truth is, if this does beautifully, excellent,” Aiken said. “If it doesn’t, at least I can’t blame anyone else.” As for how RCA is feeling about it, the 29-year-old said, “They’ve always tried to fit a square peg into a round hole with me. This time they said, you know what, ‘just let him do what he wants to do.’” The full story at newsobserver.com has since been removed.

Clay Aiken On What Makes ‘On My Way Here’ Special

As Clay Aiken prepares to release his new album ‘On My Way Here’, the ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up was asked by the Charlotte Observer what makes his first album of original songs since 2003 so special. “It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for five years, and that makes it plenty special,” Aiken said. “There’s a song on it called ‘On My Way Here.’ We found that song, and the lyrics just really struck me.
