Alison Sudol On Making A Record About A Tree

Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy music

Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy is featured in a promo interview for her third studio album ‘Pines’ and its accompanying book. The 28-year-old singer songwriter talked about creating the music and book in parallel, what went behind the album title and the process of creating the album.

Talking about the record and book release and which came first to create, Alison explained, “The book and the music, the story and the music kind of developed together, and as I developed the story I was writing the songs and everything that I was going through was a really intense transitional period in my life, and the way I made sense of all these changes was writing.”

A Fine Frenzy singer Alison Sudol talks about As for the title of the record, Alison said, “I’ve always loved trees and I love evergreens and I love pines and I love the word pine and I love what it means. It’s not the most lovely feeling but it’s something I identify with, but I don’t think until much later that I realized how much I pined. It was a real effort to stop pining and to start really living and not looking back all of the time.”

Discussing the process of creating the record, Alison said, “I’ve never seen the sun rise so many times from the wrong end in my whole life. It was torrentially raining in Los Angeles that week too, right before Christmas, so it was just a weird thing . I decorated the whole studio and covered it in twinkle lights and pine cones and things. When you were in there, you were in a completely different world. I was really aware of how sensitive a project it was and how easily someone laughing at me for making a record about a tree could completely derail the whole process. I was really aware.”

Asked why she was so drawn to the forest, Alison responded, “There aren’t that many places where there’s a true sense of mystery and I’ve always felt drawn to forests because you look in and you don’t know what’s in there.”

The 27-year-old said, “I realized I wanted to make art that would transport people to some beautiful place and that would allow them to feel safe enough to connect.”

Sudol added that writing tracks from her latest album ‘Pines’ “really helped me work through what was blocking my being present.” Alison said she uses yoga as a reinforcement for things she’s learned and to stay connected.

A Fine Frenzy To Release Third Album ‘Pines’ September 18th

A Fine Frenzy 'Pines'

A Fine Frenzy (Alison Sudol) announced that their third studio album ‘Pines’ will be released September 18th on Virgin Records. The album follows her 2009 sophomore album ‘Bomb in a Birdcage’. The 27-year-old had this to say about the new release:

Sometimes I feel like the world has been strapped onto the back of a giant rocket and it’s hurtling us into the unknown at a pace we’re not entirely equipped to deal with. All kinds of things are falling off, good and bad. It’s a crazy, exciting, terrifying time - so much is changing, and fast. Yet some of the most wonderful things in the world are slow- rivers and seasons and turning leaves and growing older with the ones you love. I wanted to create an environment where a person could retreat to, somewhere vivid and real where their minds and hearts could wander freely. I wanted it to be a place you could go to feel, like a quiet spot in a forest or the sea on a cloudy day.

Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy

Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy posted a message for Rio+20 at iucn.org, where the singer songwriter talked about her role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the global environmental organization.

“We know that the status quo is not working. What we need is deep-rooted change, a shift in social consciousness, where everyone plays their part in creating the sustainable world that we all want,” Sudol writes. “We are at a unique point in history - modern technology has given us the means to connect with each other on a global level, to combine our minds and imaginations towards creative solutions for the major problems our planet is facing, and to make our voices heard.”

Rio+20, United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 20-22, 2012.

Alison Sudol Creates 3 T-Shirt Designs For Alternative Apparel

Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy checked in with her Facebook followers on Thursday (August 11), talking about teaming up with Alternative Apparel to release 3 limited edition print tees for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The singer songwriter tells readers:

My pals at Alternative Apparel and I have enlisted the help of bears, boats and trees to make a few special wearables just for you. We took a field trip to Family Industries, where I learned how screen printing is done (hint: it involves a squeegee…!), and even got to hand print one of the shirts myself!

Best of all, part of the proceeds from each shirt go to the IUCN, which is a wonderful organization that I am proud to be a Goodwill Ambassador for.

“These t-shirts, there are three different shirts and they go together,” Sudol said in the video documenting her visit to Alternative Apparel. “The concept is basically out with the new, in with the old. Within that I kind of wanted to incorporate elements of nature. So we have the tree, and the bear, and also I love ships, so there’s a tug boat as well.”

David Archuleta Meets A Fine Frenzy

A Fine Frenzy

Alison Sudol, better known as A Fine Frenzy, got to meet David Archuleta recently in Hollywood after the ‘American Idol’ runner-up talked about how he had wanted to meet the singer. The two chatted about the album writing process, what made Alison want to do a children’s book. Alison then performed her song ‘Blow Away’ as Archie looked on and occasionally sang along.

“When you have done it enough you start to really know what you want to hear,” Allison told David about the album creation process. “I think it’s important to understand the kind of world you want to create with your music and what you want other people to feel and experience when they listen to. Just understanding the journey you want to take people on with your record. Then, once you know that, then you can kind of align everything else with that because you have sort of the bigger picture. That’s what I try to do.”

In response, David said, “That’s my ultimate goal, to get to a place where like I feel right now I’m still figuring out where it is that I’m drawn to, not just what I’m drawn to but things that I’m drawn to that I feel I can really help me be expressive with my music and be able to connect with people and accomplish what I want to with songs and making just music that has a purpose and can really have an effect on people in a way that I want to effect them. I’m still figuring that out. I am what I am and I think that’s why people were able to connect to me so much before on the show where I didn’t even have my own music. I want to be real. I want to be myself, because I feel that’s what people connect to the most.”

The two told their Twitter followers afterward:

Alison: Aww look! Darling @DavidArchie and I had such a lovely meeting. He’s the sweetest!

David: @AFineFrenzy It was really great getting to chat with you! Thanks so much again for your time!
