Jimmy Kimmel Mocks Singing Competition TV Shows

Jimmy Kimmel was going hard at reality singing competitions in his ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ monologue on Thursday night (May 24), including the latest which joins him on the ABC lineup - ‘Duets’. The show, which features John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Robin Thicke, joins ‘American Idol’ and ‘The X Factor’ on FOX, as well as ‘The Voice’ on NBC in the genre. Kimmel joked:

We’re excited because we have a new show premiere tonight here on ABC, a singing competition show. It’s about time somebody did one of those.

Each of the new show’s stars say they are in search of undiscovered talent, which I don’t think we have anymore, to be honest with you. In fact, I think we should start forcing some of our existing celebrities back into obscurity.

Here’s how a TV pitch meeting goes. “Ok, so, it’s a singing competition, and…” “Stop right there, we love it. We’re putting it on.”

A new ‘American Idol’ winner for the fourth year in a row is the white kid with the guitar. This one’s name is Phillip Phillips. It will be hard to forget someone with that name, but I have every confidence that we will.

Elliott Yamin: Jessica Sanchez Should Have Won ‘American Idol’

Elliott Yamin on Carlton Way

Elliott Yamin checked in with his Twitter followers (@elliottyamin) earlier tonight, talking about Phillip Phillips beating out Jessica Sanchez on Wednesday night’s ‘American Idol’ finale. The ‘Idol’ season five third place finisher apparently took some flack for strongly showing his support for Sanchez while suggesting Phillips wasn’t a real singer. The 33-year-old singer writes:

Missed the Idol finale tonite #AI …..but it sounds like I didn’t miss much by the sounds of who “won” #justsayin Jessica Sanchez is a REAL singer!.. I thought this was a singin competition??.. what a shame

American Idol has become MUCH like politics, in the sense that - we, as a people get mad at who’s in office, when WE are the people who put them there…or, are we?

Look yall, @americanidol has been sooooooo good to me and gave me a CAREER I’ve ALWAYS dreamed of, so, I’m NOT “biting the hand that’s fed me” and I am in debt with the amount of gratitude I have towards them… I’m just sayin, that I don’t get it, that’s all.. hats off to the winner & ALL the finalists!

Lee DeWyze

‘American Idol’ producer Nigel Lythgoe turned to Twitter yesterday, apparently unhappy about season nine winner Lee DeWyze refusing to present the show’s top prize to last night’s winner Scotty McCreery. Nigel told his followers (@dizzyfeet):

I was so upset Lee DeWyze wouldn’t present the winners trophy to Scotty. Especially as he’d been on the show this Season. I guess he was shy

The refusal apparently had ramifications beyond the Tweet, with Lee getting no recognition for being in the audience by host Ryan Seacrest. Instead, Lee was pointed out before a commercial break by the show’s unseen announcer. Lee had earlier told his Twitter followers (@LeeDeWyze) that he wasn’t asked to perform on last night’s finale.

Scotty McCreery On Lauren Alaina: We’re Really Close

Scotty McCreery

Fox All Access producer Monica Guerra walked along with Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina backstage right after ‘American Idol’ as they were leaving the Nokia in Hollywood. Scotty did all the talking due to Lauren’s vocal problems, which forced her to write the one question she was asked on a notepad. “We’ve been together since day one,” Scott said about their friendship, though several clues including their behavior during this interview suggests it’s more than a friendship. “I met her day one in Hollywood, we were going to confessional, and she was asking questions left and right, just being a chatterbox like she is. So we’ve been friends since day one. Been in school together, so we’re really close.” Watch the video via YouTube below.

Chris Medina Talks J.Lo, Fiance & ‘Idol’ Exit

Chris Medina visited with ‘Access Hollywood’ after his shocking ‘American Idol’ elimination on Wednesday night. The singer talked about the fan support that he has been receiving, donations he and his fiance Juliana have received to help with Juliana’s care after she was severely injured in a car accident, his believe that the judges made the right decision by the judges, what he thought about Jennifer Lopez tearing up after giving him the boot, and what he’d think about being asked to re-join ‘Idol’ if someone was unable to continue next week.

“I didn’t until I saw it last night, it was really touching,” Chris said about Jennifer Lopez’s breakdown. “I couldn’t believe that she had that kind of bottled up emotion over that specific situation. She handled herself really, really well until I left. You could tell she was sad when she was telling me, but I had no idea it was like that. It was very moving… It was real nice that she cared.”

Chris Medina ‘What Are Words’ Video

Chris Medina

Chris Medina left ‘American Idol’ earlier this week after the judges felt he wasn’t among the best 24 contestants on the hit FOX show. The exit prompted judge Jennifer Lopez to erupt in a flood of tears during the emotional exit interview. Now, Medina has released a song based on his emotional story called ‘What Are Words’ on the ‘Idol’ 19 Recordings/Interscope imprint. The track was written and produced only a few days ago especially for Medina to perform by acclaimed hitmaking songwriter-producer Rodney Jerkins (Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige). The song is now available for download at iTunes. A video, shot this past weekend, just premiered on AOL.com.

A 26-year-old barista from Illinois, Medina captured the hearts of viewers for more than simply his vocal talent. His story of becoming the primary caregiver to his fiancée, Juliana Ramos, who was severely injured in a car accident just months before they were scheduled to wed, won him fans around the country. One of those touched by the story was Jerkins, who was so inspired that he penned ‘What Are Words’ for Medina to record earlier this week.

“To go from a mass audition in Milwaukee to the ‘American Idol’ stage in Hollywood and then to record an original song by and for Rodney Jerkins has been an amazing journey not just for me but for Juliana,” said Medina. “To be able to work in the studio with someone of his stature was a dream come true.”

Added Jerkins: “When I heard the story of Chris and Juliana, the words and music just flowed. Sometimes a song is more than a song and that’s really true with ‘What Are Words’.”
