Darryl Sterdan of the Winnipeg Sun reviewed Fefe Dobson’s self-titled debut giving it 3 out of 5 stars. Sterdan writes, “These 12 songs are a schizophrenic jumble of sounds and styles — on one tune, she displays the urban funky-girl pop of Nelly; on another, the punk sass of Pink; here, the street-poetess musings of Alanis; there, the guitar-chick rock of Avril.”
Nekesa Mumbi Moody of The Associated Press profiled the difficulty teen newcomer Joss Stone has trying to break into R&B radio as a white female, while Fefe Dobson may have the same struggle breaking into pop/rock radio because of her mixed race. “Being biracial, my mom being white and my dad being black, I always found it hard to know who liked me, what I belonged to. I had problems with it,” Fefe says. “Knowing that they saw it as a beautiful thing was really what inspired me to just feel confidence in this business … (to) not feel ashamed of being a dark-skinned girl doing rock ‘n’ roll.”

Dan Aquilante of the New York Post reviewed Fefe Dobson’s self-titled debut album. He writes, “On her self-titled debut, this 18-year-old chick from the Great White North writes and sings straight from the heart. The musical power rests in the simplicity of guitar/drums/voice arrangements and the lyrics are personal.”
Fefe Dobson was on the phone with WBLI in Long Island this morning to talk about what she’s up to ahead of the release of her debut album on December 9th. Dobson says she was inspired by several artists including Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain, Judy Garland, John Lennon, and more. Dobson then previewed her gig for the station at The Downtown in Farmingdale.

The New York Daily News profiled the latest batch of female pop stars including Leslie Mills, Fefe Dobson, Katy Rose, Maria, Christina Milian, Joss Stone, Tiffany Villarreal, and Tina Ann. Dobson says she turned to the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain for inspiration when prepping her self titled debut. “When I was recording,” recalls Dobson, “I’d look at Kurt Cobain’s poster on the wall and it felt like he was telling me, ‘You can do it!’”
Chart magazine caught up with Toronto teen pop rocker Fefe Dobson and asked about the inevitable comparisons with fellow Canadian Avril Lavigne. “Avril has great energy and people love her, and she went far, and I hope she goes far on the next album,” Dobson said. “But I’m excited to touch the world with what I have now and bring a different spice to it.”
