Selena Gomez: White Stripes Didn’t Influence ‘Naturally’ Video

Selena Gomez talks about her 'Naturally' music video and the fashion, hand movements and possible White Stripes influence

Selena Gomez, who was recently celebrated by VEVO for receiving 100 million views for three of her music videos, spoke about one of those videos, ‘Naturally’.

“‘Naturally’ for me was a defining moment in my music career,” Gomez explained. “It was my first kind of song that made me realize the style of music I wanted to do. It has a great message, it’s beautiful, it’s fun, it makes everyone want to dance and the video was just a blast. Chris Dooley did this one. He’s super sweet and he was good too. I was sixteen but it kind of was an older song, so it was like a very thin line.”

Talking about her wardrobe for the video, Gomez explained, “This outfit was really funny, because I was sixteen, so there was a lot of hands in the pot on how it was supposed to be visually. The dress I originally had did not have red tights underneath it, but that was a little too much skin, so we added the red, which actually makes it look better visually. I actually had a girl come to one of my concerts dressed in that exact outfit. She went and bought an outfit that looked like the one from ‘Naturally’, which was adorable.”

Discussing all of those hand movements in the video, Selena said, “I was a little uncomfortable doing this video though because it was literally all about the hands and all about the movement, and I’m not good at that anyway. I need things behind me to distract people from what I’m doing, so we had someone behind the camera helping me do my little hand movements that I also do on stage, because now I’m used to doing that because of ‘Naturally.'”

Quizzed about the visuals in the video and if Jack and Meg White were the inspiration, Selena said, “People have actually asked if there was a little White Stripes influence, but not really. Now that I’m looking at it, I totally get why, not no, we kind of just wanted to make it seem like a kaleidoscope.”

Selena Gomez Has A “Really Special” Relationship With Her Fans

Selena Gomez talks about her fans

Selena Gomez had a lot of great things to say about her fans for VEVO Certified, which celebrated the singer and actress for having 100 million views of her music videos for ‘Naturally’, ‘A Year Without Rain’, ‘Who Says’ and ‘Love You Like A Love Song’.

“It’s a good feeling when you feel really passionate about the meaning of the song and have fans respond to it in a positive way,” Gomez said about those who have backed her music with The Scene. “I have incredible fans that are on a whole other level. It’s really, really special. Every meet and greet I have, or even when I meet someone at the movies or at the mall or something, they’re just like my friends in a way, so it’s nice.”

Talking about the confidence her supporters give her, Gomez said, “My fans have more faith in me than I do in myself. When I do concerts or when I do anything, I’m like, ‘Are people here? Are they going to show up? Do they care?’ When you get on stage, you’re able to see what the music does for people. I’m just always nervous and always want to be the best.”

Discussing how she has involved fans in her music videos, Selena said, “I like to be very fan interactive. The very end of ‘Who Says’, the last scene we shot was fans and myself all running to the ocean and we all jump in, and it was freezing, but it was really, really fun. I was able to thank them for coming out. It was a good moment.”

Selena Gomez On The Importance Of Music Videos

Selena Gomez talks about music videos

Selena Gomez, who was recently celebrated by VEVO for receiving 100 million views of her music videos for ‘Naturally’, ‘A Year Without Rain’, ‘Who Says’ and ‘Love You Like A Love Song’, talked about the importance of music videos for the honor.

“I think music videos are definitely important to being an artist and representing the song and your image and what you want to portray,” Gomez explained. “Music is constantly changing. Style is constantly changing. You are constantly changing, so it’s fun to display that… I am getting older. I’m growing, I’m changing and I don’t know what that means, but it is fun to kind of display it in my music.”

Talking about her initial foray into the medium, Selena said, “My first music video was for Disney and it’s called ‘Cruella De Vil’ and it’s actually where I met most of my team that I still have today. I didn’t know what on earth I was doing and literally they had to tell me what to do and how to look and how to smile. I thought it was cute. It was for [‘101 Dalmatians’], so I was happy with it.”

As for the first video with her band, Selena said, “‘Falling Down’ was my first single with my band The Scene. I videod the whole time and took 1,000 pictures. I still have those pictures. I really felt like ‘Falling Down’ was my own, so it was really fun to kind of have a little bit of creative control in how I wanted it to look and I remember we used LED lights and I was like, ‘Oh, what is this? It’s so cool’. It was changing behind me and I thought it was so amazing.”

Discussing the video views milestone, Gomez said, “It’s exciting when my video gets 100,000 views. I think that’s amazing. Then when it gets a million, I get really excited and happy, so 100 million, that’s kind of a lot.”

Questioned about her most recent music video, Gomez said, “‘Hit The Lights’ was the last video and the newest video that I have. It’s a fun video. It’s just about being who you are in your life and just living it up.”
