Sugababes Open Up About Post Shake-up Stress

Sugababes on the cover of Fabulous magazine

Sugababes are on the cover of the latest issue of Fabulous magazine. Though non of the original members of the British pop trio are currently on the line-up, Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and newest member Jade Ewen insist they’re stronger than ever.

Longest-serving Babe Heidi talked about the moment she came face to face with ex-bandmate Keisha Buchanan for the first time since she was kicked out of the band. “There were hugs and tears, but I’ve made my peace,” Range said.

Ewen confessed she often questioned her decision to join the band since she received plenty of backlash from Keisha diehard fans. “Nothing could have prepared me for that…I’ve grown a thicker skin over the last couple of years. I’ve had to,” Jade said.

Amelle opened up about piling on pounds after the stress of the band turmoil and having since shedding the weight. “Looking back it’s almost like it happened to someone else. I was so low,” Amelle said. “I feel reinvigorated. I try not to have any regrets…I wouldn’t change a damn thing.”

It took me a good few years. I’d never talk about it for the first year, I even resented anyone asking me about him… I didn’t think they understood.” Watch the singer’s comments at bbc.co.uk.

New Year’s Eve Fireworks Lead To Marriage Proposal For Heidi Range

Heidi Range spoke with OK! magazine about how her fiance Dave Berry popped the question after dating seven years. “Our flat overlooks Parliament and the London Eye and we’ve got amazing views of the fireworks on New Year’s Eve, so we decided to have a relaxed evening drinking champagne as we were flying early (to India) the next day,” the Sugababes star explained. “I was in my pajamas putting the washing on while watching ‘Love Actually’ and at five to midnight, I went to get my slippers to go on the roof terrace (and then he proposed).” The couple plan on having the wedding October 2011.

March 21, 2010 - Sugababes newcomer Jade Ewen spoke with The Daily Record about the abuse she received after it was announced she’d be replacing founding member Keisha Buchanan in the British girl group and how her parents were there to support her during the difficult time. “It’s fair enough for fans to have an opinion on the new line-up but, when they say they want to kill me, that’s a bit much,” Jade said. “I’ve had people say things like, ‘It’s a good thing your dad can’t see your ugly mug’. People say racist things or that they want to hurt my family members. My mum struggles with anything negative. I tell her even the biggest artists like Beyonce get criticism.” Read more.

“This is another one of the downtempo songs on the album,” Heidi Range said. “It’s got a really good story to it, and even when we perform it we kind of put actions into it. I get a bit carried away with the story of the song.”

“The video was a lot of fun,” Jade said. “A lot of pain actually for me. I’m sure you’ve seen the hairpiece was not exactly fun. We took a hanger, cut it up, put it in my hair and made a funny shape out of it. It was just quite heavy and trying to do the routine (was difficult). A million hair grips in there, loads of cord wrapped around it. Every time I danced around I was terrified the thing would come out and whack one of the girls.” Jade also talked about the difficulties filming it in front of a green screen.

Sugababes Heidi & Amelle Couldn’t Take Working With Keisha Anymore

Sugababes singers Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah are opening up about the latest shakeup with the British girl group that saw founding member Amelle Berrabah get ousted. “Bullying is a strong word. It sounds bad. But no one likes to be treated horribly,” Amelle told The Daily Record. “I was being singled out every day and I didn’t like the way I was being treated. I dreaded going in to work even though I had worked so hard to get here. I didn’t have a voice, Heidi didn’t have a voice and the people who worked around her didn’t have a voice. Even people who worked with us threatened to quit because they couldn’t take it. I took a lot of sh** from her as did Heidi and the rest of the team.”

Heidi spoke of similar emotional stress working with Keisha. “I couldn’t take it any more and neither could Amelle. How we allowed ourselves to be treated had gone on too long,” she explained. “It was pretty bad the last year of the previous line-up. I respect Keisha for the eight and a half years we have been together so I wouldn’t want to tell tales. But we had to make a decision whether to work in that environment.”

Sugababes On Sugababes Features Jade Ewen

Jade Ewen talks about her Sugababes bandmates Amelle Berrabah and Heidi RangeThe second Sugababes on Sugababes features Jade Ewen discussing her bandmate Amelle Berrabah and how she’s a funny person who has a knack for random outbursts. Jade said when she met Amelle and Heidi Range for the first time, she expected Heidi to be shy and Amelle to be this massive personality, but she discovered it was the opposite at first. Jade said Heidi’s best quality is that she’s caring and understanding.

“Things that Amelle does that really make me laugh, to be honest she has a really funny personality in general and she’s always making light of most situations. It’s probably her random outbursts. We could be having a serious conversation, or it could just be silent like 3:15 in the morning and we’re already tired, and she’ll come out with something crazy or start running around. I don’t think she realizes it. She’s on the road and she’s in the background somewhere singing.”

Asked what she’d buy Heidi to cheer her up, Jade said, “Probably something to do with one of two things. Something to do with cooking, because she absolutely loves it. I’m not sure it would necessarily cheer her up. Or maybe something for Buddy. She has a really, really cute dog, he’s a pug, and he’s got this little squished face, and she misses him lots because he spends lots of time in Liverpool, so I might get him something cute.”

Sugababes On Sugababes Featuring Amelle Berrabah

Amelle Berrabah talks about her Sugababes bandmates Heidi Range and Jade EwenFebruary 13, 2010 - The first Sugababes on Sugababes features Amelle Berrabah discussing her bandmate Heidi Range having a really funny personality and dressing with a really classic style. Amelle described Jade Ewen as being an uplifting person who is fun to be with and is very honest, truthful and respectful.

“The thing that I know about Heidi that most people don’t, being people that don’t actually know her like her friends would know her, that she’s really funny,” Amelle said of Heidi. “She does crack me up and she’s got a really funny personality and even though people know she’s really a lovely person and everything, I don’t think people know that she can really make you laugh sometimes if you don’t know her.”

As for their newest member, Amelle said, “How I would describe Jade in three words, one would be she’s a very bubbly and uplifting person. Second, she’s a really fun person to be with, even though these aren’t actual words, but you catch my drift. The third, I’d say, she’s very honest and very truthful and respectful. You got more than three there.”

Sugababes Busy Promoting ‘Wear My Kiss’

Sugababes 'Wear My Kiss' single cover

Amelle Berrabah checked in with fans on the Sugababes blog at MySpace (@sugababesofficial) on Friday (February 5), discussing their time in Barbados, meeting Gordon Brown’s wife, and what’s up in their schedule in support of their new single ‘Wear My Kiss’. The 25-year-old singer writes:

Hello!

So as you know, we had an absolutely amazing time in Barbados. Then since we’ve been back we’ve just been busy rehearsing the new single ‘Wear My Kiss’ and we’ve done a few gigs too, two in Liverpool, one in Newcastle for T4 and the Cervical Cancer gig at Koko, which was really good. We met Sarah Brown, the PM’s wife, for the second time, and she was really lovely. We were talking about why we were there, our thoughts on lowering the age of getting smear tests from 25 to 20, it was a really positive chat. We got to see a few performances too – Pixie Lott, La Roux, Paloma Faith – Paloma’s absolutely lovely, first time I’ve met her. It was just a really good day and we got a lot of positive feedback about the campaign. I think a lot of people learnt something new that day – when we found out all the facts about cervical cancer we were generally shocked, so it was good to be part of something that affects so many women and to help get the word out there

Today we’ve been at MTV to do some links and a bit of presenting. It’s been really busy but all good. I quite enjoy reading off an autocue, I felt like a proper presenter, you know, I start nodding when someone else is talking and look to camera occasionally, all that! So watch out for that on MTV!

Lots of love, Amelle x

I love the tube, and then all of the sudden you become a Sugababe and you can’t get on the tube anymore, and it’s like, what do I do now? I always got travel sickness, which is why I don’t want to be in a car for any longer than I have to.”

Heidi said, “I’d love to learn piano, and I’d love to learn different languages. Learn it on the road and take the books. I’d like to learn Italian. I can speak a little French but I’d like to learn do that, and Spanish.”

For her part, Amelle said, “I’m the same really, learning languages. I’d love to play piano, guitar. I’ve had a thing about the violin for ages but it’s so hard. It’s really hard.”

Jade Ewen said she’d like to finish the three ‘Twilight’ books, while Amelle Berrabah said she’s reading ‘Bright Shiny Morning’ by James Frey. Heidi Range suggested a music industry book and Alan Carr’s autobiography ‘Look Who It Is!’.

“I want to finish off ready ‘Twilight’,” Jade said. “I’ve read the first one. I’m on the second book and I haven’t finished. I really am a fan of ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Twilight’, anything that’s sort of fantasy. We never really get the chance to sit down and when you do get time you’re tired, so I read about three pages and I fall asleep.”

“For me, I’m reading two books actually. ‘The Kid Moves On’ and I’m reading one by James Frey, who did ‘A Million Little Pieces’ and ‘My Friend Leonard’. It’s called ‘Bright Sunny Mornings’, it’s a fiction. I normally like true stories. This is one of my first fiction (books) I’ve read but it’s really good.”
