Tegan And Sara Talk ‘Heartthrob’ With Andy Samberg

‘Heartthrob: The Interviews’ features Tegan and Sara Quin sitting down with Andy Samberg, talking about what they consider to be attributes of a heartthrob, citing people who are charitable, generous, thoughtful, being a rebel, being trendsetters, being comfortable with your body but not obsessed with your physique, and definitely not having a mullet.

“I remember getting funny feelings about Madonna ‘Truth or Dare’,” Sara confessed. “Her body is perfect in that movie.”

Tegan and Sara Heartthrob 2013“Cyndi Lauper, as girls we looked up to her, because she was like a strong, alternative, progressive, open-minded, articulate, powerful woman,” Tegan said. “I don’t love Cyndi Lauper impersonators. I think what Cyndi stands for is being your own person, not being her. Sometimes you just wanna have fun.”

Tegan then told the ‘Saturday Night Live’ funnyman, “Andy, I don’t want to be awkward about this or anything. I don’t want this to be weird. We really like you. I think you’re just so talented and you so handsome and you’re so sweet. I just want to make sure it’s very clear that you’re not our kind of heartthrob.”

Tegan And Sara On Naming Their New Album ‘Heartthrob’

Tegan and Sara talk 'Heartthrob'

Tegan and Sara Quin discussed how they came up with the name of their seventh studio album ‘Heartthrob’ in a video for The Warner Sound. ‘Heartthrob’ was released by the sibling duo in January, led by the single ‘Closer’.

“I think that the master list for naming ‘Heartthrob’ when it was still untitled was nearly a hundred different names,” Tegan explained. “Finally, you and I, we had a fight actually, because you had finally got to a point where you were like, ‘Let’s just pick this one’, and it really wasn’t resonating with me, so we went through this list of like a hundred names, and we picked the five we were loving the most, and I e-mailed them to you, and you e-mailed me right back, and you said, “‘Heartthrob’. I like that one. I never saw that one’, then you and I started brainstorming on how that title fit the record conceptually.”

As for how the previous album title influenced the decision, Sara said, “The title of this record would be almost the opposite of ‘Sainthood’. I didn’t want a passive title. I didn’t want something that made us sort of seem martyred. I wanted something that was very confident because we were feeling so confident about the album we made.”

Explaining why she bought into the title, Tegan said, “‘Heartthrob’ really fit for me because I love the concept of it. I idolize the people that I date. I truly put them up on a pedestal, so it really resonated with me for that reason.”

Tegan And Sara Discuss ‘Heartthrob’, The Black Keys & Living Far Apart

Tegan and Sara are interviewed on 987FM in Los Angeles about their tour with The Black Keys, the time between tours, how they manage living in Montreal/New York and Vancouver/LA respectively, and their intentions to have their new album 'Heartthrob' sound nothing like their previous work

Tegan and Sara stopped by the studios at 987FM to talk with Darren Rose about their new album ‘Heartthrob’, the year and a half lag between tours as they worked on the project, how they stay in communication while living on opposite coasts, and touring with The Black Keys.

On how they were turned on to The Black Keys, Sara said, “I know that I feel that I’ve loved The Black Keys for quite a long time. I never would assume that a) we would have ever toured with them though. They were definitely a band that I really, really liked sort of from afar, and I think we heard a couple of years ago or read somewhere they were sort of maybe giving us a little props, or just saying that they liked us or whatever. I remember thinking ‘No way! The Black Keys know who we are?’ So it’s been a couple of years now, or a couple of albums really now that we’ve been familiar and been exited. I’ve actually seen them play before. I got to see them on ‘Saturday Night Live’, in the building. I was actually in the audience the night they did ‘SNL’ for this record. It was super cool. I wasn’t on ‘SNL’ you guys, but I was there in person.” (more…)

Tegan And Sara Premiere New Song “Closer”, New Album Due January 2013

Tegan and Sara 'Closer'

Tegan And Sara have premiered a brand new song called ‘Closer’ at their official web site, TeganAndSara.com. The track is from the Quin sisters’ follow-up album to their 2009 release ‘Sainthood’. The new album is due out January 2013.

“Sara calls ‘Closer’ my ‘let’s get it on’ track,” Tegan explained in an interview with Rolling Stone. “And although I do imagine that this would be an okay song to make out to, all I intended was to write something sweet that reminded the listener of a time before sex, complicated relationships, drama and heart break. In short, I was writing about my youth. A time when we got ‘Closer’ by linking arms and walking down our school hallway or talked all night on the telephone about every thought or experience we’d ever had. It wasn’t necessarily even about hooking up or admitting your feelings back then. In fact THAT rarely happened. It was the anticipation of something MAYBE happening that was truly exciting and satisfying. We were perpetually getting ‘Closer’, yet we rarely got physical with one another, if ever. These relationships existed in a state of sexual and physical ambiguity. Is there anything more romantic than that?”

The duo’s album has Tegan and Sara working with Greg Kurstin, Mike Elizondo and Justin Meldal-Johnsen. During the new album’s creation, Tegan and Sara presented an inside look at the recording process with their Carpool Confessional weekly video show. The series was filmed from the back of Tegan and Sara’s car and featured several guests and collaborators.

In addition to a handful of headlining shows and a performance at Austin City Limits, Tegan and Sara have some massive tours coming up with the likes of The Black Keys and The Killers. A full list of tour dates is below the cut.

Tegan And Sara Shoes, Designed By Emy

Sara of Tegan and Sara talks about their shoes designed by Emy for MacbethMacbeth shoes are releasing two new pairs of shoes for Tegan and Sara, including a Tegan shoe and a Sara shoe, both designed by Emy. Sara and Emy are featured in a video clip talking all about it and the process of designing the footwear.

“It’s interesting because when I was a kid I really, really loved shoes like so much, and we only got like one pair of shoes a year, and I don’t really remember specifically any pair of shoes except for a pair of Tegan’s shoes that we talked about often, they were called the purple shoes,” Sara explained. “They were a purple shoe that I don’t want to mention the name obviously because they were a direct competitor with Macbeth, who is doing this shoe. I remember she had these shoes and she’d let me wear them maybe once every six months. So that’s why (the shoes have) purple.”

Tegan And Sara Talk About New Tour

Tegan and Sara talk about what fans can expect from their upcoming tour

Tegan and Sara are touring the US this fall in a final tour supporting the Con. The twin sisters posted a video on their YouTube channel to talk about the tour, and plans to play new and unreleased songs this time.

“We’re here making a video because we don’t really have anything else to do,” Tegan said. “There’s not like a whole bunch of things like banking and haircuts and songs to learn and tour to put together and bags to pack and our birthday tomorrow and mom to prepare for her arrival in a few hours, so instead we decided to make you a video.”

Tegan comes up with a new song after Sara was smoking pot and sleepingTegan also added that they’ll be playing new songs on the tour. “So we wanted to prepare the people out there that have tickets for a different kind of show,” she explained. “We’re gonna be doing some unreleased songs, some songs that were going to be released on the ‘I’ll Take the Blame’ EP that you maybe got online and if you didn’t get it online and are thinking to yourself, ‘Oh my god I just want a hard copy of it’, we’re selling it on this tour. At the end of the tour, the last show in LA we’re actually auctioning off Sara and all of her clothes, which is really exciting. We’re really excited about that. We always say that we’re gonna play certain songs and we never do, (but now) we’re gonna do it. We’re gonna re-enact what happened last night, because Sara smoked pot all day yesterday and passed out at 5 and slept for like three hours, and I practiced and came up with an amazing thing.”
